Why It Matters

Bone and Muscle Both Respond to Load

Bone density starts declining from around age 35, and for women that loss accelerates at menopause. Muscle follows the same path: sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, begins earlier than most people expect and drives falls, fractures and loss of independence.

The good news is that both respond to load. With the right training, at the right dose and safely supervised by a physiotherapist, bone and muscle can be maintained and rebuilt at almost any age.

The Five Principles

What Actually Builds Bone

✓

Lift Heavy, Properly — progressive resistance training under supervision.

✓

Add Impact — hopping, stepping or jumping, matched to your level.

✓

Train Balance & Posture — to reduce fall risk.

✓

Fuel Your Bones — adequate protein, calcium and vitamin D.

✓

Build and Hold Muscle — progressive overload to counter sarcopenia, not just bone loading.

✓

Be Consistent — a minimum of twice-weekly training.

Program Levels

Start Where You Are, Progress From There

Level 1

Strong — Foundation

Build technique, confidence and a base of strength in a fully supervised setting.

Level 2

Loaded Strength

Introduce the barbell and progressive loading as your capacity grows.

Level 3

High-Intensity Bone Loading

Higher-intensity resistance and impact work, in line with the evidence for building bone.
